Cordula Olszamowski explains the SDGs to the students
On 4th December 2023, Cordula Olszamowski from Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V. German Branch lectured the international students of the Department of Economics Master's degree course 'Business Ethics and CSRs (Corporate Social Responsibility)' about the practical CSR activities of Mitsubishi Electric worldwide, and Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V.
In a practical exercise, the corresponding SDGs are assigned to the CSR activities
In a practical exercise carried out by the students, which is usually performed by the company's CaRO (Compliance and Risk Management Organization) department, the students had to match each CSR activity, in this case the annual 'Changes Award' with the appropriate United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this case, SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) were applicable to the Changes Award scheme.
CSR is a very important topic for the Mitsubishi Electric Group. The activities of a company that contribute to sustainable business are defined as CSR. CSR is based on corporate behaviour towards the environment and society, including a moral aspect: social responsibility. In some cases, companies only comply with legal requirements relating to the environment and society. However, when we talk about CSR activities, we contribute to society on a voluntary basis and promote sustainability practices.
What do the United Nations' 17 SDGs Say?
Globally, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation including the German Branch of Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V., are working to achieve the SDGs. Universities also have a special responsibility with regard to resource-conserving thinking, as they educate the decision-makers of tomorrow. The Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences supports the concept of sustainability in an exemplary manner. CSR as it is promoted here is an essential building block for teaching and research.
